A J Casson

Who is the Artist A J Casson?

A J Casson was born Alfred Joseph Casson. He is a Canadian artist born in Toronto to an English father and a Canadian mother. Franklin Carmichael is a member of the famous Canadian Group of Seven artists, responsible for A.J. Casson’s discovery of his love of oil painting.

In 1919, both men worked for a Commercial Art firm in Toronto, and it was Franklin Carmichael‘s responsibility to train the young Alfred. Franklin Carmichael encouraged Casson to paint in his spare time, allowing the artist time to discover his distinctive oil painting style.

A.J. Casson's oil paintings are some of the most popular Canadian landscape paintings of the 20th Century. In 1925, two other Canadian painters, Carmichael, and FH Brigden, joined to form the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolor.

Which Artists Were Members of the Group of Seven?

1926 saw the artist accept a request to join the Group of Seven. However, following its dissolution, in 1933, A.J.Casson founded the Canadian Group of Painters. The Group includes the renowned female artist Emily Carr. Founding members of the Group of Seven include Lawren Harris, J.E.H.
