Orientalism Paintings by Addison Thomas Millar
Addison Thomas Millar is a 19th-century American painter best known for his Orientalism Art and Genre oil paintings of North African scenes. He was born in Ohio in 1860 and died in a car accident in Connecticut in 1913. Millar started painting as a very young child, and by the age of 9, he had already won several art competitions. His success encouraged his parents, and he began taking formal art lessons.
During the early 1880s, Millar trained in New York City at the Shinnecock Summer School headed by William Merritt Chase, and in 1894, Addison Millar traveled to Paris. He studied at the Academie Julian along with the Italian genre portrait painter Giovanni Boldini.
Addison Millar Orientalism Paintings
In 1985 Millar visited Spain, and it was from here that he made his first visit to Algiers. Algeria provided Millar with a constant source of inspiration for his Orientalism Art. Many of his Orientalist paintings depict merchants and traders selling their wares in the markets and souks. Some of Addison Thomas Miller's best-known Orientalist fine art oil paintings include
- An Eastern Shop, Rue Koleher Algeria, and
- An Oriental Shop.
- The Waterfall, Miller's oil on canvas painting, was completed in 1910. The original oil on canvas artwork is held at the Smithsonian America Art Museum.
Former Vice-President Pence and his wife received this painting on loan from the Smithsonian for display in their official residence during his time in office.
