Orientalism Art by Alfred Stevens

Alfred Stevens was born in Brussels in 1823 as Alfred Emile Leopold Stevens.  He died in France aged 83 and is celebrated for his paintings of women. His brother Arthur was an artist, while his father was a dealer and collector who owned several Eugene Delacroix paintings.  In 1858 Stevens married Juliette Hortense Blanc, a society heiress, with Delacroix witnessing the marriage. 

He studied at the Academie Royales des Beaux-arts in Brussels, with several of his paintings exhibited at the Brussels Salon.  At the 1853 Paris Salon, the artist received a 3rd class medal, and in 1900, the Ecole des Beaux-Arts held a retrospective exhibition in his honor. His circle of friends included Fredric Bazille, Edgar Degas, and Puvis de Chavannes.

In addition to his portrait painting Alfred Stevens is known for his Seascape paintings, often depicting the coastal area of Normandy.  During a time of financial difficulty, Stevens accepted paying students, including William Merritt Chase and Lilla Cabot Perry.
