Impressionist Paintings by Alson Skinner Clark

Alson Skinner Clark was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1876 to parents of privilege. He died in Pasadena, California, in 1949.

He is an American Impressionist painter best known for his landscape paintings. Skinner Clark studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and later at the Academie Julien in Paris. In addition, the artist received tutoring from James McNeill Whistler and William Merritt Chase at the Art Students League of New York. He also spent some time in France, close to the Giverny home of Claude Monet, and it was here he painted Summer Afternoon Giverny in 1910.

Upon his return to the United States in 1920, he married Atta McCullin. They lived in Pasadena, California, where he taught at the Stickney Art School alongside fellow American Impressionist Guy Rose.

Alson Skinner Clark’s impressionist oil paintings appear in various international collections, including the Los Angeles County Museum, The Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and the San Deigo Museum of Art. Famous paintings by Alson Skinner Clark include Laguna Beach 1924, and La Jolla, painted the same year.
