Anna Ancher

Anna Ancher: A Famous Danish Artist

Anna Ancher, born in Skagen in 1859, died at the age of 75 in 1935. She married fellow artist Michael Peter Ancher.

Anna's parents were both artists, and she had demonstrated an interest in art from a very young age. She received her education at the Vilhelm Kyhn College of Paintings in Copenhagen. Her early paintings illustrate the influence of Vilhelm Kyhn, whose romantic landscape paintings are exhibited in major Danish art museums, including the Danish National Gallery.

Ancher's Impressionist paintings are known for their use of light and color and portrayals of everyday life in the small fishing village of Skagen.

Joining the Skagen Painters.

Anna Ancher and Michael Ancher are associated with the Danish art colony, the Skagen Painters. These artists came together during the latter part of the 19th century, forming an artists' colony in a village in northern Denmark.

Anna is the only female member of the Skagen artist colony, while Peder Severin Krøyer, also known as P.S. Kroyer, is the most famous artist of the Group. She is an artist known for her Impressionist oil paintings, and her art was exhibited at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. Ancher studied in the Studio of Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, and her oil paintings generally depict interior scenes and Genre paintings of the everyday lives of the people of Skagen.

Anna Ancher's most famous painting, The Harvesters, was created in 1905. Sunlight in a Blue Room 1891 is a popular and colorful painting demonstrating Ancher's bold use of color and exploration of light. Both paintings are on display at The Skagens Museum.
