Anton Mauve was a member of the group of artists known as the Hague School whose cousin-in-law was Vincent van Gogh. Van Gogh admired Mauve greatly and mentions him in over a hundred letters to his brother Theo.  Van Gogh refers to the artist as a significant influence in his work. Many oil paintings by Anton Mauve contain scenes of peasants working in the fields and grazing sheep and cattle.  Plowing Farmer c1848, Girl Watching the Flock, and The Sand Cart 1875 are three examples. Anton Mauve was born in Zaandam, Netherlands in 1838, dying prematurely in 1888, aged 49. Friends of the painter include Dutch artists Jozef Israels and Willem Maris.
