Arshile Gorky was an American artist of Armenian extraction.  His influence on the Abstract Expressionist Art Movement cannot be underestimated. Although his 1920s works illustrate his interest in Cubism paintings, hIs art is a pivotal link to Surrealism artwork. The Live is the Cock's Comb by Arshile Gorky is one of his most famous oil paintings, which was exhibited in Paris at the Galerie Maeght Surrealist show of 1947. He was born in 1904 and took his own life in 1948, aged 44. Arshile Gorky studied in Boston at the New England School of Art.  During his early career, the influence of the Post Impressionist artist Paul Cezanne is evident.  At the request of Edmund Greacen, he taught at New York's Grand Central School of Art from 1925-1931.

Arshile Gorky's personal life was littered with difficulty and drama.  In 1948 a studio fire destroyed many of his paintings, and the same year he had major cancer surgery. A car accident left him temporarily paralyzed, and shortly after, his wife left the marriage, taking their two children. It was later the same year that he committed suicide.
