Artemisia Gentileschi

Artemisia Gentileschi Baroque Paintings

Artemisia Gentileschi It an Italian artist, born in Rome in 1593 and died in 1653.  Her father was Orazio Gentilischi, also a painter. She is one of the first successful women artists, and of the many famous Baroque artists, she is the only female painter. By age 15, she was already working as a professional artist. Her early art evokes the style of Caravaggio paintings.  Gentileschi's body of work includes mythology art and Religious paintings. Her famous paintings are Judith Slaying Holofernes, which the Uffizi Gallery in Florence holds, and Susanna and the Elders, completed when she was just 17 years old.   Her paintings are acclaimed for their naturalism and are the subject of major international art exhibitions.

Artemisia Gentileschi was the first female of successful Florentine artists to be accepted by the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno. As a highly respected artist, she gained favor with the Court of Medici and received patronage from the Spanish nobility.  From 1620 to 1626, Gentileschi was working in Rome when Judith and her Maidservant was completed.  The original oil on canvas painting is at The Detroit Institute of Arts and is evidence of her skilled use of Chiaroscuro.  After a period in Naples, Artemisia Gentileschi attended the Court of Charles 1 in London, where her father, Orazio, was the Court painter. Self Portrait as the Allegory of Painting belongs to the Royal Collection Trust. After Orazio died in 1639, it is believed that Artemesia returned to Naples, where she continued to paint.

The History of Reproduction Oil Paintings

Oil painting reproductions have a long and illustrious history. Fine art reproductions are traced to the 16th century, with many Old Masters employing apprenticed painters to recreate their original artwork. It is known that Leonardo da Vinci honed his artistic skills by copying the Renaissance oil paintings of Andrea Del Verrochio.  More recently, famous artists like Edgar Degas and John Singer Sargent also used this practice.
