Arthur Dove, Modern Art Paintings
Arthur Dove is an American artist born in New York in 1880. Although Dove worked in several movements, including Abstract Art, he is mainly known for his Modern Art Paintings. He was born into a wealthy family, and Dove's father was a successful businessman with high expectations for his son. His parents were disappointed with his choice to become an artist and were unsupportive during difficult times. At Cornell University, he illustrated the yearbook and, upon graduating, became an illustrator for The Saturday Evening Post and Harper's Magazine.
After being married for 25 years, Dove experienced a difficult separation from his first wife, Florence. She refused to give him a divorce and was refused access to his son A long-term relationship with another artist followed, and Helen Torr (Mona) and Dove only married after Florence's death.
American Artists, Arthur Dove and Alfred Maurer
Arthur Dove traveled to Europe in 1907, visiting London and Paris. In France, he became friends with another American artist, Alfred Maurer, and became familiar with the colorful art of Henri Matisse paintings and the Fauve Art Movement. Returning to America in 1909, his paintings were exhibited at the Stieglitz 291 Gallery. His most famous patronage came from the founder of the Phillips Collection, Duncan Philips. Although they only met on one occasion, it is known that Duncan Phillips purchased two Arthur Dove paintings.
Arthur Dove suffered ill health in later years, and he and Mona moved back to Long Island's North Shore, providing inspiration for many of his famous paintings. Dove died in 1946, aged 66 years.
