Chaim Soutine Expressionist Paintings

Chaim Soutine was a French/Russian painter who contributed to the Expressionist Art Movement. He is one of the artists responsible for bridging expressionism and abstract expressionism.  Many famous Soutine paintings are of bellhops, cooks, and servers.

Who is Chaim Soutine?

He was born in Belarus in 193 and died in France in 1943, aged 50.  He is of Jewish descent and one of eleven children. After studying in Vilnius, Soutine studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. During this period, he became a close friend of Amedeo Modigliani, who painted several portraits of Soutine.

In 1922, the famous American art collector Alfred Barnes purchased 60 of Soutine's paintings when he met Soutine and saw his work. Twenty-one paintings remain as part of the Barnes Collection in Philadelphia.
