Charles Angrand Impressionist Oil Paintings

Charles Angrand is a French artist known for his Impressionism and Pointillism paintings. The famous paintings of Jean-Baptist-Camille Corot influenced Angrand's early work. This is observed in his oil painting, The Seine at Saint-Ouen, Morning, which the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam holds.   Charles Angrand emulates Georges Seurat and Paul Signac in some of his oil paintings. Using a neo-impressionism technique, often called Pointillism, Angrad's color palette is more muted.  The Harvesters by Charles Angrand was completed in 1892. Its relationship to Georges Seurat's famous painting, A Sunday on la Grand Jatte, is evident.  Other pointillism paintings include The Seine at Courbevoie. The Harvesters is on display at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston.

Who is Charles Angrand?

Charles Angrand was born in Normandy in 1854.  In early 1880, he moved to Paris.  Here, he became acquainted with some of the 19th and 20th century's most famous artists;  Georges Seurat, Vincent van Gogh, and Paul Signac. While Angrand's paintings are less well-known than his contemporaries, he moved in illustrious circles.  He was refused entry at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. However, he later cofounded the Societe des Artistes Independents with Odilon Redon, Paul Signac, and Georges Seurat. Oil paintings by Charles Angrand are seen in galleries and museums worldwide. These include The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Musee d’Orsay, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

Charles Angrad lived the life of a recluse for the latter part of his life, and he died in Rouen in 1926 at 71.
