Claude Lorrain Baroque Paintings

Claude Lorrain is one of the most famous French artists of Baroque paintings.   Lorrain spent much of his life in Italy, creating landscape oil paintings of Rome and the surrounding countryside. Some of his famous paintings include:

Port at Sunset 1639, on display at The Louvre, Paris

Embarkation of the Queen of Sheba 1648, owned by the National Gallery, London

Arcanus Shooting the Stag of Sylvia 1682, also held by the National Gallery, London.

Landscape with Apollo and Mercury 1645, believed to form part of the collection at the Doria Pamphilj Gallery in Rome.

Many famous paintings by Claude Lorrain are of 17th century classic landscape scenes of historical ruins.  Almost every painting contains figures.  The detail of his landscape paintings, methodical depictions of historical paintings, and his highly skilled use of light make him a celebrated 17th century famous artist of the Baroque period of art.  His artistic career commenced with painting frescoes, something he returned to later in life. Claude Lorrain was influenced by the landscape paintings of the Dutch Mannerism artists and the famous landscape paintings of Venetian artists like Domenico Campagnola.

Although Lorraine did not receive a broad education, his Religious paintings display a good knowledge of The Bible and an understanding of mythology.  He was the leading Baroque artist in Italy during the 17th century, receiving commissions from Pope Urban VII, who was interested in France and its culture. Lorrain also enjoyed the patronage of the nobility in France and Italy. Around 250 of Claude Lorrain's paintings survive, but over 1,000 drawings and some etchings exist. UK art collectors highly regard his landscape paintings, and many of his famous paintings are owned by English Art Museums.

Who is Claude Lorrain

Claude Lorrain was born in Champagne in around 1600 and died in Rome, probably aged 82.  He was born Claude Gellee and little is known about Lorrain's early years.  Lorrain was orphaned at 12, and we know he received tutelage from the leading fresco painter Agostino Tassi.  The artist was associated with Nicolas Poussin, also a Baroque period artist, but with an emphasis on religious art.  Lorrain achieved financial success during his lifetime and was known his paintings were expensive for the time. He is the most famous landscape artist of the Baroque period of art.
