Coles Phillips Art Deco Paintings

Coles Phillips was born Clarence Coles Phillips. He was born in 1800 in Springfield, Ohio.  He is famous for his Art Deco illustrations and introduced the "fadeway technique" into magazine cover illustrations. The Art Deco period of 1920-1940 wasa preceded the Art Nouveau movement of 1880-1914. His illustrations are numerous and include Good Housekeeping and Liberty, but the most famous Art Deco style images were created for Life Magazine.  Coles took classes at the Chase School of Art for a short time.  During his employment at Life Magazine, the "fadeaway girl" concept was introduced, and Coles Phillips's future was assured.

In 1924 Phillips contracted tuberculosis and died of the disease in 1927.
