ABOUT ARTIST

Dirck Van Baburen

Dirck Van Baburen

Dirck van Baburen is a 17th-century Dutch painter whose family moved to Utrecht when he was a child. He was a close follower of the Italian artist Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, known as Caravaggio.

He was a founder of the Utrecht School of Caravaggisti, which comprised a group of artists whose profound influence arose from paintings by Caravaggio.

Dirck van Baburen was born in 1595 and died in 1624; his career was short. Only a few of his paintings are known today. Most of his oil paintings were painted in Rome.

Baburen's most famous oil painting, The Procuress 1622, is on view at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.  The painting The Procuress holds many similarities to Caravaggio's painting The Cardsharps, painted some 28 years earlier, in 1594. Baburen's Dutch Golden Age paintings are in locations across the globe, including the National Gallery in London, the Borghese Gallery, and the San Pietro in Montorio Church in Rome.
