Emile Bernard
Emile Bernard was born in Lille, France, in 1868. One of his famous paintings is Breton Women in the Meadow, also known as The Pardon or Forgiveness. Completed in 1888, this oil painting on canvas is on display at the Musee de l'Orangerie in Paris. He was acquainted with Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, and several other famous Post-Impressionism artists.
In 1878 Emile Bernard's family moved to Paris, where he continued his art studies. While in Paris, he befriended two other famous artists of the period, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Louis Anquetin. His body of work includes several famous portrait paintings. Portrait of Bernard's Mother was completed in 1887 and is on display at the Van Gogh Museum. Modern Art gained greater understanding and appreciation when Emile Bernard made public the letters exchanged with Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, and Odilon Redon during 1887-89.
Gauguin's paintings bear striking similarities to the oil paintings of Emile Bernard, both in color palette and composition. Breton Peasants, painted in 1889, provides the perfect example. Pont-Aven became a popular meeting point and an opportunity for both artists to show their work in a local cafe. While in Pont-Aven, Emile Bernard painted Breton Women with Umbrellas. However, one of our most popular oil paintings is Breton Women at Prayer (Les Femmes Bretonnes a la Priere), displayed at the Dallas Museum of Art.
