Frits Van den Berghe is a Belgian artist.  He was born in Ghent in 1883 and is known for his Expressionist art and  Surrealism oil paintings. 

After his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Frits Van den Berghe joined an art colony in East Flanders, known as Latem, located in East Flanders.  It was here that he met Gustave de Smet and together, they founded the Flemish Expressionist art movement.   He is a multi-faceted artist known for his illustrations, comic strip drawings, as well as oil paintings on canvas.

Van den Berghe's personal life was complicated. Although he married in 1907, his affair with Stella van de Weile disrupted both his family and career. With the onset of World War I, he was a refugee in the Netherlands.  He was a multi-faceted artist known for his illustrations, comic strip drawings, and oil paintings on canvas.

Famous expressionist paintings include Self-Portrait c1933 and Self-Portrait with Skull 1938.  In addition, Frits Van den Berghe surrealist paintings are influenced by some of the genre's most important artists, including Edvard Munch and Egon Schiele.
