George Caleb Bingham

George Caleb Bingham is an American artist famous for his Hudson River School Paintings.  He was born in Virginia in 1811, and his family moved to Missouri when he was 8.  As a result, Bingham is known as the "Missouri Artist." In addition, Bingham is known for his Luminism paintings.  Not only was he an accomplished artist, but he was also a politician and soldier.  In 1838 Bingham married his first wife, Sarah Hutchison, and had four children.  After her death, he married twice more.

By the early 1830s, George Caleb Bingham was acknowledged as a talented artist of portrait paintings.  Although he studied briefly at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, where he Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts where discovered the oil paintings of Benjamin West and portrait painting by Thomas Sully.  he had a natural gift and was entirely self-taught.

Owned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Fur Traders in Missouri is one of his most famous paintings.  He completed the painting in 1845.    In 1848 Bingham was elected to the Missouri House of Representatives, and his Election Series of oil paintings include Canvassing for the Vote.   A popular George Caleb Bingham painting is Washington Crossing the Delaware.  This historical painting is held by The Chrysler Museum of Art in Virginia.
