Female artist Harriet Backer was born in 1845 in Holmestrand, Norway. She showed an early interest in art and began taking drawing lessons at 15.

In 1864, she moved to Munich, Germany, to study at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. She also studied in Paris and Rome, where she discovered the art of the French Impressionists. She studied under the famous artist Jean Leon Gerome, who was known for his Orientalism art and academic paintings.

Harriet Backer showed her paintings in the late 1800s, including at the World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893.

The artist died aged 87 in 1932. In 2018, a Paris exhibition featured oil paintings by famous female artists. Some artists included were Harriet Backer, Anna Ancher, Berthe Morisot, and Mary Cassatt. The exhibition showcased their work to the public.
