Jacques-Laurent Agasse was a Swiss painter who was born in Geneva in 1767. Agasse is known for his animal paintings and landscape oil paintings. Agasse traveled to Paris to study at veterinary school so that he could understand the anatomy of horses and you can enjoy many of his horse paintings in our art collection. Whilst in England he painted numerous racehorses owned by the wealthy English nobility who were his patrons. 

One of his most Agasse’s most famous paintings is The Nubian Giraffe, which depicts one of three animals sent to Europe by Muhammad Ali Pasha, of Egypt.
