ABOUT ARTIST

John James Audubon

John James Audubon

John James Audubon was an American ornithologist and artist famous for painting The Birds of America in their natural habitat.

Audubon was born in 1785 on his father’s sugar plantation in what is now Haiti. When the family moved to a farm in rural Pennsylvania, he began to study and paint the local wildlife, especially birds.  However, Audubon's father moved the family again, and Audubon was raised near Nantes, France. In 1826 John James Audubon was encouraged to travel to England with a portfolio of 300 of his paintings.  Upon his arrival in Liverpool, he was met with immediate acceptance, and the locals found Audubon fascinating if not a little eccentric.  Whilst in Liverpool, he received sponsorship to produce an illustrated volume of 497 life-sized American birds.

In 2010 a copy of his Birds of America was sold at Sotheby’s for $11.5 million, the second highest price ever paid for a single printed book. King George VI was a patron of Audubon, who was later elected as a fellow and recognized for his exceptional work by the Royal Society of London.

Audubon’s famous book Birds of America contains over 400 paintings that can now be created as hand painted oil painting reproductions.
