J M W Turner Romanticism Paintings

J M W Turner is a world-famous 18th and 19th century British British artist for his Romanticism paintings of landscape and seascape art. Joseph Mallord William Turner's paintings influenced the Impressionist painters, particularly Claude Monet, who is known to have studied JMW Turner's paintings.

JMW Turner's art allowed him to become a famous and wealthy young artist.  Financial security allowed him the freedom to experiment with styles and painting effects. Turner is famous for his use of light and the effect of sunlight.

Turner paintings were admired in his day, and many members of the British aristocracy commissioned him to paint scenes from their estates, including The 3rd Earl of Egremont of Petworth House in Sussex.

Who is J. M.W. Turner?

Joseph Turner was born in London on April 1775.   Turner's father was a barber, and his mother died in a mental asylum in 1804.  Turner also had a sister who died when she was five.  Aged 14, J M W Turner was accepted by Sir Joshua Reynolds, the Academy's 1st President at the Royal Academy of Arts.   JMW Turner exhibited his first painting at the Academy when he was 15.  He was influenced by Henry Fuseli, a Swiss artist who spent most of his life in Britain. Turner also admired paintings by Thomas Gainsborough, known for his romantic paintings.

Turner was a prolific artist known to have painted 550 oil paintings on canvas, over 2,000 watercolors, and 30,000 works on paper.

  • The Fighting Temeraire 1839 is undoubtedly Turner’s most famous painting.  It is on display at The National Gallery in London and was bequeathed to the British Nation upon his death.
The Fighting Temeraire has been displayed on banknotes and is an iconic and popular oil painting reproduction.
  • Death on a Pale Horse was completed between 1825 and 1830.  Turner's oil on canvas painting was also part of his legacy and is displayed at Tate Britain in London.
  • Snow Storm 1843  is also displayed at The Tate.  When John Ruskin, the famous art critic of the time, first saw Turner's Snow Storm painting, he proclaimed that "it was one of the grandest statements of sea-motion, mist, and light," although, at the time, other art critics did not share his view.
  • Peace Burial at Sea 1843  Turner's Peace - Burial at Sea oil painting depicts the burial at sea of David Wilkie.  Wilkie was a friend and fellow artist of Turner's, and the painting is a memorial to their friendship.

The Tate Gallery in London holds the most comprehensive exhibition of JMW Turner's art, and his oil paintings are represented in most museums worldwide and private collections. In 2010 the J Paul Getty Museum paid $45 million for a Turner painting, setting an auction record.
