Marie Guillemine Benoist Oil Painting Reproductions

Marie Guillemine Benoist was born in Paris in 1768.  Her father was a politician, and her mother was from an aristocratic family.  

Aged just 13, Benoist began her studies at the Studio of Vigee Le Brun, who had already earned the reputation of being Paris's most famous portrait artist.   Some five years later, she moved and worked under the tutelage of Jacques Louis David, a French Neoclassical artist and a prominent and much-acclaimed painter of the time.   Other famous artists of the French Neoclassical art movement include Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres. Marie Guillemine Benoist first exhibited at the Paris Salon when she was 23 with her 1791 mythology-influenced oil painting, Psyche Bidding Farewell to her Family.  However, most of  Marie Guillemine Benoist's historical paintings lean heavily in the direction of her mentor, Jacques Louis David.

Portrait of Madeleine, dated 1800, was exhibited at the Paris Salon the same year.  One of Benoist's most famous nude paintings, it was initially named Portrait of a Negress.  However, when the sitter was identified in 2019, the painting was renamed, Portrait of Madeleine.  It was acquired by Louis XVIII in 1818 and now resides at the Louvre Museum.  Portrait of Madeleine by Marie Guillemine Benoist is a most unusual painting of the period, portraying a woman of color.   Described by one critic as a "black stain," the painting received negative reviews.
