Michelangelo Renaissance Paintings

Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni was born in Italy in the Republic of Florence in 1475.  He is better known as simply Michelangelo and the most famous Italian Renaissance artist.  Not only was he a painter but also a poet, architect, and sculptor who was hailed as the greatest living artist until he died in 1564.   Michaelangelo's Renaissance paintings make him the most famous artist and sculptor ever. Born in Tuscany, he went to study in Florence and, at only 14, was taken by the powerful Medici family to study at their Humanist Academy.

Famous Michelangelo Paintings

  • The Torment of St Anthony - is said to have been painted in 1487 when he was 12 or 13. The painting is located in the South Building of the Kahn Gallery, a Renaissance painting alluding to St Anthony's visions of being attacked by demons.  However, attribution to Michelangelo is disputed by some scholars.
  • The Creation of Adam - The Creation of Adam by Michelangelo was painted between 1508 - 1512. It is a Renaissance art icon and is universally instantly recognizable.  'Adam and God painting' is one of our most famous art reproductions.
  • The Last Judgment - Adorning the Sistine Chapel altar wall, Michelangelo's Renaissance painting foretells the second coming of Christ.  His religious art took over four years, incorporating 300 figures of angels and paintings of male nudes. In subsequent years, some male nudes were covered with drapes and robes.
  • The Crucifixion of St. Peter - located in the Vatican Palace, commissioned by Pope Paul in 1541
  • Ignudo Series of Frescos - Ignudi refers to the series of Michelangelo's famous works of male nude art displayed in the Sistine Chapel paintings.

Who Painted the Sistine Chapel?

The most famous Michelangelo's Religious Art and Sistine Chapel ceiling paintings took four years to complete.

Many of his paintings and sculptures are considered to be the greatest works of art ever created. Perhaps he is most famous for the statue of David. Most of his early work was sculpture, but he was commissioned by a newly appointed Pope, Julius II, to paint over 500 square meters of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.  Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Raphael were all contemporaries. These famous artists are known for their Renaissance paintings and sculptures.
