ABOUT ARTIST

Reynolds Beal

Reynolds Beal

Reynolds Beal is an American Impressionist artist born in New York in 1866. Beale's father, William Reynolds Beal, was a successful portrait artist, while his mother focused on watercolor paintings.

His wealthy family owned a summer home in Newburg on the Hudson River, where he created many American landscape paintings. As an independently wealthy artist, Beale could devote his life to his greatest passions of painting and sailing. Many of Reynolds Beal's paintings involve sailing paintings of the yachts and boats moored around Rockport Harbor.

Reynolds Beale studied Naval Architecture at Cornell University and later at the Arts Student League in New York, training under two of the most famous American Impressionist artists of the time, Childe Hassam and William Merritt Chase. While in Europe, Reynolds Beal attended the Academie Julien in Paris and the Ecole des Beaux-arts. During the early 1900s, Beal was part of the Noank Art Colony, a collective of American artists whose members include the landscape artist Henry Ward Ranger.

Reynolds Beal's brother, Gifford Beale, was also an artist. The brothers traveled extensively, making trips to China, the Far East, Europe, the Caribbean, and the South Pacific. Upon the brothers return to the US, they held a joint exhibition of 83 of their oil paintings at the Fitchburg Art Museum (formerly the Fitchburg Art Center) in Massachusetts.

American Impressionist Paintings by Reynolds Beal

The Impressionist art movement heavily influenced Beal's painting style. His oil paintings characterize the use of vibrant colors, visible brushstrokes, and an emphasis on capturing the effects of light and atmosphere. However, Reynold Beal famous paintings are also distinctly American, as his art often depicts scenes of American landscapes and everyday life.

One of Beal's most distinctive features was his use of color. He was known for his bold and vibrant color choices, adding energy and movement to his paintings. He also had a keen eye for capturing the effects of light, particularly in his sailing paintings, where he expertly depicted the shimmering reflections of the sun on the water.

Beal's colorful paintings also have a sense of spontaneity and liveliness, as he often painted en plein air, capturing the scenes quickly and impressionistically. This technique adds a sense of freshness and immediacy to his paintings, making them feel alive and vibrant.

Sailing Paintings by Reynolds Beal.

Beal's most enjoyable pastime was sailing; he was an avid sailor, spending much of his time on the water. Beal's sailing paintings capture the beauty and tranquility of the sea, as well as the thrill and excitement of sailing. Yachts at Rockport, Massachusetts, painted in 1930, and Rockport Harbour are famous Reynolds Beal paintings. Beal's studio overlooked the Harbor at Rockport, and many of his sailing paintings depict this area of Massachusetts.

Several Reynolds Beal paintings form part of the Phillips Art collection, including Beach Ponies and Jacksonville Waterfront 1914

Ill health plagued the artists in later years, and Reynolds Beal died in Rockport, MA, in 1951.
